ARTWORK BY TAKASHI MURAKAMI

Freed Hotel & Residences is set to become the first Toronto location to feature artwork by the world-renowned artist Takashi Murakami, making it a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and those interested in experiencing a piece of future pop culture history.

 

Born in Tokyo in 1962, Murakami is a graduate of the Tokyo University of the Arts. In 2000, he introduced the concept of "Superflat," a theory of contemporary visual culture that bridges traditional Japanese art with the flatness of anime and manga, while also reflecting on Japanese society's state.

Murakami's influence extends globally, with accolades such as the Best Thematic Show award from AICA-USA for his 2005 exhibition, "Little Boy," at the Japan Society in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include "Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow" at The Broad in Los Angeles (2022), "Perrotin Dubai" (2022), "MurakamiZombie" at the Busan Museum of Art in Busan (2023), "Unfamiliar People – Swelling of Monsterized Human Ego" at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco (2023-24), "Still Lifes with Flowers" at Perrotin in Shanghai (2023), and "Mononoke Kyoto" at the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum in Kyoto (2024).

“...it’s a sculpture decorated with ‘flower’ motifs where a family could communicate with one another to find out how these motifs relate to each other. In short, when I created this sculpture, I had to write a scenario to imagine if those ‘communication’ between a parent and a child would work out or not when going 360 degrees around this sculpture.” – Takashi Murakami
